Costume Design Award

It is without a doubt an amazing and humble experience to have your work recognized. The Pikes Peak Arts Council Award (PPAC) for costume design for my 2014-2015 season meant so much. Mostly because the season was epic in reach for me creatively: from fairy tales to 1960s-esque camp to simulated tattoos to the absurdity of Beckett.

The pace of the season was brisk, and exemplified the mantra I teach my design students, "Costume design is 50% creative and 50% administrative." Organization was a key factor in making every show happen. But anyone who does performative art knows that the work is also highly dependent on the hard work of the people behind the machines: my stitchers, wardrobe crews, dressers, and shop assistants.  No one person creates theatre.

What a true honor it was to stand before my fellow artists, patrons and my family and accept this award.  You can see on my face the joy I felt that night. And as is my nature, I couldn't resist the spotlight to make a joke or two.
